Stefan Buhr is a Los Angeles–based cinematographer and filmmaker whose work spans narrative film, television, commercials, documentary, and branded content. Equally comfortable behind the camera and overseeing a production from concept through delivery, he brings together a strong visual sensibility, technical expertise, and a practical understanding of what it takes to bring a story to life.
A graduate of the University of California, Irvine, with a B.A. in Film and Media Studies and a minor in Digital Filmmaking, Stefan built his career working alongside experienced filmmakers on professional sets. His camera department credits include productions for HBO, Netflix, History Channel, A&E, and Paramount+, with experience ranging from documentary and unscripted television to commercial and narrative filmmaking.
As a Director of Photography, Stefan has photographed episodic television, narrative short films, commercial campaigns, and branded productions. His work includes the CBS-affiliated series Staycation! and Destination SF, alongside independent narrative projects and original commercial productions. Through his production company, Backlit Buhr Media, he has developed, produced, photographed, and edited content for businesses, brands, and independent creatives.
Stefan approaches cinematography as both an art and a discipline. He believes compelling images should do more than look beautiful—they should serve the story, establish a perspective, and create an emotional connection with the audience. His experience across a wide range of production environments has shaped an approach grounded in preparation, collaboration, and adaptability. Whether working with a full crew or navigating the demands of a lean production, he knows how to make creative decisions under pressure without losing sight of the larger vision.
Beyond cinematography, Stefan brings extensive experience in camera systems, lighting, post-production, and aerial filmmaking as an FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot. His work has taken him across the United States and internationally, giving him firsthand experience with the logistical and creative challenges of location production.
While his career has crossed multiple disciplines, narrative filmmaking remains a central creative ambition. He continues to develop his body of work through short films, with the long-term goal of photographing feature films.
Stefan is available for cinematography, commercial and branded productions, narrative collaborations, and select full-time opportunities with production companies and creative teams.
